We received a package today in the art room!

How exciting! We just received a package of ATCs from Dolvin Elementary School, Georgia. My 3/4 students were so very excited to receive a card each and learn about a school from the U.S. A. We viewed the website and we discussed similarities and differences. The ATCs depicted the season of autumn. We discussed that in Australia we don't use the word fall but rather autumn. We also discussed that our seasons are at different times of the year. The students wanted to know what time it was in Atlanta. So we discovered that on Wednesday at 10.30 a.m. in Melbourne, in Georgia it was 5.30 p.m. Tuesday night.  I would like to thank Hope Knight and the lovely students from Dolvin Elementary School.
So, here are our ATCs ready to be posted. We have focused on Ancient Egyptian art this term, so we decided to stick to the same theme. Check them out.... they look fantastic!

Walk like an Egyptian!

This term in Year 3/4 the focus has been on Ancient Egyptian Art. 


Most students have enjoyed the experience of studying Egyptian Art. Of course having a most engaging exhibition at our Museum has contributed to the interest in this topic.


 I myself visited the amazing Tutankhamun Exhibition at the Melbourne Museum and purchased some goodies. In fact I bought 2 awesome masks that gave me an idea for an art activity.


I traced the masks on cardboard.The students studied Egyptian patterns. They were encouraged to use a combination of oil pastels (including metallic pastels), coloured markers and pencils. I was very pleased with the overall results.

Keith Haring Inspired Paintings

We learnt about the artist Keith Haring and enjoyed exploring his artwork. The students enjoyed viewing and playing on Keith Haring Kids website.
Using their Visual Art diaries they wrote about facts about the artist and then enjoyed drawing Harring inspired images. First the students drew their designs with a Graphite lead pencil, outlined their drawings with either a black Sharpie or black paint. They were encouraged to use vibrant colours. They absolutely enjoyed this project and remained completely focused. Outstanding Art Year 5 students!

Cardboard Marionettes inspired by Joel Henriques

This term the Year 1 and Year 2 students are learning about toys. Well, I did think to myself how on earth I was going to come with 11 weeks worth of toy making. So I wanted to make a basic marionette puppet and came across Made by Joel and found this simple but fantastic idea. I absolutely love this website, it has some amazing ideas. Anyway, the children loved the activity, because it was simple yet very effective. They added other parts to their marionettes and we used corrugated cardboard. It was a great success. The pleasing part was seeing them play with them outside in the playground.

More Monkeys - Year 6

OK, so now I'm really impressed with the latest sock monkeys that are coming through. Some students chose to take them home to work on. I'm so very proud of my students and it has been wonderful to see the talent shine, especially from the students who never speak and just get on with the job. Absolutely extraordinary..

There's Monkey Business in the Art Room!

 It has now become a tradition that every year our Year 6 students make sock monkeys. The process in making the sock monkeys is quite lengthy and some students lose interest. Most enjoy the experience and even go a step further in making their own cool clothes. Somehow though I start off with 50 needles and end up with just over 20. Next year I will purchase all the the socks, I found that having to rely on students to bring in their socks delayed the starting of the project.
