Rainbow Fish - Year 1

The Year 1 students have been learning about the Ocean in their respective classrooms. I got given iPad packaging frames. So I painted them black and thought that small art works would look fantastic. And they do! 
We read the picture story book 'Rainbow fish to the rescue' by Marcus Pfister and I encouraged the students to observe the illustrations. So they used pencils to draw a story on a small page. We then used fluorescent water colours. Once dried, I added a few pieces of metallic paper. They are absolute keepers!

Olympic Graffiti Posters - Year 5

 So my Year 5 students have always wanted to create graffiti art work. This is not as easy as it seems because Graffiti art can be very complicated. So it was during the London Olympics 2012 period when we decided to create posters that represented what an elite athlete may feel during their biggest moment at the Olympic Games. The students first researched Graffiti art, then chose a descriptive word and began drawing their respective designs in their Visual Diaries. They used large sheets to draw in pencil then painted in fluorescent paints. Once dry, the students outlined with black markers.

Royal Castles - Prep

Preps are learning about 'Fairytales' this term, so after seeing a similar art task on Deep Space Sparkle, I decided that this would be a perfect start to the unit for my Prep students. So I gave them the option to choose from 2 castle designs. One was more challenging than the other. Once again, I gave the students a step by step lesson. They used pencil and then followed by using fluorescent watercolours. These are fantastic and bright. In the next lesson, the students used metallic pens to add detail and finally glitter paint to add sparkle to the flags, windows and the draw bridge. 

Under the Sea - Year 1

For this piece the students explored decorative pattern, using REPETITION of shape. Students explored a technique involving the application of soft pastel along the edges of paper, putting these one by one onto the page and smearing the colours outward from the shape with the thumb or finger.

Sock Monkeys are back in the Art room!

My students all look forward to year 6 because we traditionally make 'Sock Monkeys'. This year I actually prepared a procedural text with images to help them along the way. I know that my blogger colleagues have asked me for the pattern.When I can work out how to save a document as a link, I will definitely post it for all to see.

So far I have been very impressed with the Year 6 sewing skills, in particular the boys.

Most students are engaged and having an absolute ball. Can't wait to see the Sock Monkeys hanging in the Art room.

Year 6 Coil Bowls

We have finally finished our first ever Clay Coil Bowls... Hurray! Thanks to Ann Duke from Strathmore North Primary School for allowing me to use her kiln. I do not have a kiln in my art room. Thank you Ann for all your advise and guidance. I was very pleased with the result and the Year 6 students have really enjoyed the process. Unfortunately there were many breakages because I believe the coils were not blended properly or the clay was too thin. It's amazing what a coat of paint can do to a humble bowl. Well done Year 6 students!
